Imao Keinen was born in 1845 Kyoto (died 1923). He studied classical Japanese painting, calligraphy and printmaking. When the old Edo era ended in 1868, replaced by the new Meiji era, Keinen was 23 years old. With the upheavels of the collapse of the old era also his father's business was affected and went bankrupt. Keinen kept himself afloat by making a living as a textile designer. Later the artist founded his own studio. By and by he became known as a painter of printmaker. In 1888 he could get a post as professor at the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting. He exhibited widely in Japan and even in Paris. He had become a well-established and honored artist. In 1904 he was appointed as a member of the Art Committee of the Imperial Household, and in 1919 he became a member of the Imperial Art Academy. These were all high honorary awards in Japan.
